The Directorate for Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (Drees) publishes ‘Health expenditure in 2024’. This book presents the health accounts, tracks total health expenditure by funding, analyses the results for 2024, and places them in an international perspective.

Public health insurance (PHI) plays a major role in reducing inequalities in France. Its benefits represent the equivalent of 40% of the disposable income for low-income households in the 20th percentile of the income distribution. The latter receive higher reimbursements for healthcare costs than high-income households, mainly due to the poorer health of this part of the population.

In 2020, the COVID-19 outbreak resulted in 69,000 deaths in France (10.4% of deaths), making it the third leading cause of death for that year.
